At just 34, Sanna Marin made history as the youngest Prime Minister in Finland’s history— and the youngest serving Prime Minister in the world—when she took office in December 2019. During her time as Head of Government, Marin led her country through the fastest NATO accession process in the entire history of the alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She accomplished all of this while preserving Finland’s distinction as “the happiest country in the world,” by the the UN-sponsored World Happiness Report—a testament to leadership that safeguarded both democracy and the well-being of its people. We have much to learn from a leader who proved that principled governance and quality of life can go hand in hand.
Marin’s government was widely praised for their leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic for minimizing both loss of life and economic impact and for passing ambitious landmark reforms, including the world’s most ambitious climate targets, equitable family leave, and major improvements to healthcare, education, and human rights.
Her tenure as Head of Government from 2019-2023 reshaped global perceptions and redefined what political leadership can look like: young, fearless, collaborative, and profoundly human.
